Step 2: Remove the old hose

Step 3: Install the new hose

Slide the new hose onto the fitting

  1. Prepare the hose:

    • Cut the hose to length (use a sharp hose cutter or knife)
    • Cut straight across; angled cuts leak
    • If the hose is stiff from the package, soak it in warm water for 2 minutes to soften
  2. Lubricate the fitting (optional but helpful):

    • Wipe a thin layer of fresh water or soapy water on the barbed fitting
    • This reduces friction and makes the hose slide on easier
    • Don't use petroleum jelly on fuel hoses (it dissolves rubber)
  3. Push the hose onto the fitting:

Install new hose clamps

    • Buy stainless steel clamps (won't corrode); avoid cheap zinc-plated clamps
  2. Position the clamp:

    • Slide the clamp over the hose
    • Position it about 1/2 inch from the end of the hose (where it sits on the fitting)
    • The clamp should sit on the smooth part of the hose, not on the barbed section
  3. Tighten the clamp:

    • Tighten snugly with a screwdriver or wrench

    • Test: you should not be able to move the hose with your hand, but it's not strangling the fitting

    • Install the second clamp about 1 inch away from the first, toward the center of the hose

    • If the hose connects two fittings, clamp both ends

Restore the system and check

  1. Open seacocks (if you closed any)
  2. Fill fresh-water tanks or resume engine operation

  5. Feel around the clamps for moisture
  6. Check underneath for drips

If there's a leak
