Mid-season is when running gear problems announce themselves. You've been running the boat hard for weeks, and one day there's a buzz through the deck at 2,800 RPM that wasn't there in June. Nine times out of ten, the culprit is spinning underwater — a dinged prop, a worn cutlass bearing, or a shaft that's slightly out of true. Here's how to figure out what's happening and keep it from getting worse.

Why running gear matters more than owners think

Your "running gear" is everything that turns engine power into thrust: the propeller, the shaft, the cutlass bearing that supports the shaft, the strut, the shaft seal, and the coupling back at the transmission. It's the most heavily loaded assembly on the boat, and it lives in saltwater, sand, and the occasional crab pot line.

When any part of it wears or goes out of alignment, three bad things follow:

  • Vibration travels up the shaft into the hull, loosening fasteners and fatiguing the drivetrain over time.
  • Lost efficiency means you burn more fuel to make the same speed — a bent blade can cost you 10–15% in fuel economy.
  • Accelerated wear compounds. A vibrating shaft chews through cutlass bearings and shaft seals far faster than a smooth one.

The good news: running gear gives you plenty of warning if you know what to feel and look for. A vibration that grows over a season is a maintenance item. A vibration that appears suddenly after a "clunk" is a haul-out.

Reading the vibration

Vibration is your primary diagnostic tool, and when it happens tells you a lot:

  • Vibration that increases with RPM almost always points to the propeller — a bent or dinged blade, fouling, or an out-of-balance prop.
  • Vibration at a specific RPM that smooths out above and below it is usually a resonance in the shaft or a slightly bent shaft finding its critical speed.
  • A rhythmic thump at low speed often means a chunk of line wrapped around the shaft, or a badly worn cutlass bearing letting the shaft knock in its housing.
  • Vibration only in reverse points to the strut, coupling, or engine mounts flexing under load.

Before you assume the worst, rule out the cheap stuff. Marine growth on the blades throws a prop out of balance fast — a summer's worth of slime and barnacles on one blade will buzz. Dive the boat or check at the next haul-out. Whether you're in Florida or the Chesapeake, a fouled prop is the most common "my boat suddenly vibrates" call a yard gets, and it's the easiest to fix.

The components, and how each fails

The propeller takes the most abuse. Blades bend from grounding, dent from debris, and lose pitch from cavitation erosion over years. Even a blade that looks fine can be out of balance. A prop shop can check pitch and balance on a fixture — a "tune-up" that costs a fraction of a new wheel and often cures a mystery vibration outright.

The cutlass bearing is a grooved rubber-and-brass sleeve that water-lubricates the shaft. It's a wear item. Grab the prop and try to move it side-to-side; more than a small amount of play means the bearing is worn and the shaft is knocking. Left too long, it will score the shaft.

The shaft should be dead straight. A hard grounding can bend it a few thousandths — invisible to the eye but obvious as a speed-specific vibration. A shop checks runout with a dial indicator; anything beyond spec means straightening or replacement.

The shaft seal (packing gland or dripless seal) keeps the ocean out where the shaft exits the hull. Traditional packing should drip a few drops per minute underway and be repacked periodically; dripless seals need their bellows and faces inspected. Your seasonal running-gear routine

Most of this is inspection, not wrenching, and it pays for itself in avoided haul-outs:

  1. Every haul-out: inspect blades for dings, pitting, and edge damage. Check cutlass bearing play. Look for a bright, scored ring on the shaft where the bearing rides.
  2. Every season: verify the shaft seal is doing its job — a few drops for packing, bone-dry for dripless. Check engine mounts for cracked rubber or rust weep, which throws alignment off.
  3. After any grounding or line wrap: haul and inspect, even if it "seems fine." Bent shafts and cracked struts hide well.
  4. Every few years: have the shaft alignment checked. Engines settle, mounts compress, and hulls flex; alignment drifts and quietly eats bearings and seals.
  5. Address balance early. If a cleaned prop still buzzes, send it to a prop shop before the vibration works other components loose.

Anti-fouling the running gear helps too. A dedicated prop coating keeps blades clean between dives, and clean blades stay balanced.

When to call in a yard

Cleaning a prop and checking bearing play are owner jobs. Straightening a shaft, re-pitching a propeller, replacing a cutlass bearing, and setting shaft alignment are not — they need a haul-out, specialized tools, and a trained eye. A vibration you can't trace to fouling is worth a professional diagnosis before it damages the transmission or seal.
